So, first I would like to say that I haven't actually watched the Bachelor (Bachelorette) since the first few seasons. After a while, the stories all begin to repeat themselves. However, last night I couldn't help but notice all the buzz about the season finale of lucky number 13, so I did some reading.
For the few of you out there who do not watch this show, here's the scoop: to put it simply, Jason Mesnick, the bachelor, narrows the women down to two (Molly Malaney and Melissa Rycroft). ABC promises, as always, for the most dramatic final rose ceremony yet. This time they meant it. Throughout the entire season, viewers were led to believe that Melissa is the one; she's smart, she's fun, and she's pretty. The girl has everything going for her and she has the man of her dreams on her arm, right? Wrong!
In the "After the Final Rose" episode which also aired last night, viewers learn of a brutal plot twist. Jason, publicly, on national television, decides to let his viewers know that Melissa is not in fact the woman for him. He dumps her in front of an audience of strangers. Now this is similar to every season when the last girls are left not knowing which one will be leaving alone, however, this time, Jason made his choice, the wrong choice. He proposed to Melissa, asking her to be his wife and the stepmother of his young son, Ty. He made his bed, he should have to lay in it. Yet, at some point along their journey with one another, Jason decides he was wrong and he still loves Molly, the cute, nerdy girl whom he rejected at the final rose ceremony. He decides to reveal this information to Melissa by publicly humiliating her and then brings Molly out to ask her for a second shot. She graciously accepts him back.
Some say that Jason had no choice but to play along because of a deal with ABC, but have a heart man! You've successfully humiliated two presumably great women. Not to mention, the emotional roller coaster this must put a young child through by seeing his dad go out with, kiss and then propose to two different women in only a matter of weeks. It definitely isn't the best example to set for a young boy. Needless to say, the man seems cold hearted. I understand that we're all human and have every right to change our minds. In light of this, I believe that there are more tasteful ways to go about a change of heart than Jason's method.
My nine year old brother happened to get wrapped up in the show with my parents this season; God help the kid. But hearing his thoughts on it were priceless. My mother asked him, if he were Jason which girl he would choose and why. The little guy responded, "Well they're both great, so I'd just draw straws and then stick with my decision." Priceless. If only love were that simple.
