I just picked up my cap and gown and baby blue tassel for the commencement ceremony coming this June. All of my friends have been buzzing around about how unreal it is that this moment has finally met us. To be honest, until I purchased the cap and gown, it hadn't hit me yet. This may, perhaps, be connected to the fact that I chose my major late in the game and added two minors, leaving me with summer classes and an extra fall term. Regardless, come mid-June, those of us who do remain in Eugene for a few months to a year longer than those that are immediately moving on will still be saying goodbye to so many faces. We'll be saying sayonara to the friends who have become family and eventually leaving the place that has become our home in the last four years here. It is difficult to imagine leaving our campus bubble, where every friend, every bar, every class, every favorite place and every college memory is only a block or so away. No longer will we be able to drop in on a whim, call each other to turn around and see we're already at the same place, walk into a room and guarantee you will recognize a large percentage of the people there, throw a party without needing to ask for RSVPs, or need a shoulder to lean on and actually get a shoulder right then and there instead of a phone conversation and a possible coffee date later in the week. There is such a mix of wonder and excitement about all of the paths that are just around the corner. Our world is quickly changing.
It has finally hit me. They say, "You can't go home again." I wonder where we'll all end up.
You're in my heart, you're in my soul
You'll be my breathe should I grow old
You are my lover, you're my best friend
You're in my soul
